Advocacy groups challenged an Ohio law requiring residents to present documentary proof of citizenship when registering to vote in a Federal Case heard in the Ohio Northern District Court.

On August 25, 2026, U.S. District Judge Solomon Oliver Jr. ruled to block an Ohio law requiring residents to present documentary proof of citizenship when registering to vote at the battleground state’s motor vehicles offices. This is a very contentious issue that is in the front of mind for Oregonians.

If The Save Act were to be passed, it would sure be challenged as well.

The problem is that The Save Act is not being passed, so the challenge can not happen. This will not serve as a surrogate for The Save Act that will put the “Proof of Citizenship” issue on the “fast track” to the Supreme Court.

Last year, the Ohio Legislature enacted a law requiring people to present documents such as a birth certificate, a passport or a naturalization certificate when registering to vote while applying for a driver’s license or another type of state identification document. Various advocacy groups challenged that law in The US District Court and have received a ruling to block that legislation from Judge Solomon Oliver Jr.
